Corner House
NAIROBI, KENYA
Corner House is located in the heart of Nairobis city centre at the junction of Mama
Ngina Street and Kimathi Street. The development consists of three levels of basement
parking, four podium floors containing shops, a restaurant and offices, fifteen office floors,
a penthouse and caretakers flat on the roof.
A V-shaped tower block, with its apex set diagonally across the meeting point of Mama
Ngina and Kimathi Streets, was considered the most suitable architectural form for this
site. The first four floors form a podium which is recessed behind the tower at the apex to
form a public plaza with a fountain, trees, flags and a sunken seating area creating a focal
point around the main entrance.
Arcades through the building lead pedestrians into the courtyard, off which open a coffee
shop and restaurant. The combination of arcades, courtyard and streets produces flexibility
for a variety of shops. Some of the ground-floor shops also have space on the first
mezzanine floor while mezzanine floors two and three have a variety of office space all
with adjoining balconies.
Office floors four to eighteen have a total of 360sq metres of space each in two units
which are amendable to various partitioning arrangements.
The top-floor penthouse comprises a lounge-cum-dining room, kitchen, two bedrooms,
a bathroom, cloakroom and balcony.
Throughout the building a combination of reflective glass screen and louvres has been
used to cut out sun penetration. There are four high-speed lifts, two of which serve the
basement.
