Joint Medical Store
KAMPALA, UGANDA
Joint Medical Store supplies pharmaceutical products to a number of missionary and
private hospitals in Uganda and surrounding countries. Joint Medical Store functioned
from temporary accommodation, using shipping containers for storage and finally outgrew
its early beginnings in 1997. Funding was arranged from a consortium of Dutch aid
agencies and Triad was missioned, in competition with other consultants, to design
the new store on a green field site in the Nsambya district of Kampala.
The building complex consists of the main warehouse and an administration office building.
Included in the warehouse are distribution areas, customer service points, an operational
store with a cold room and a large bulk storage store. At the back of this building
through a separate access is a Production Unit for various pharmaceutical fluids.
The administration building also houses a canteen and a seminar room.
Cleanliness and high security were essential requirements of the brief. The project was
designed to use a prefabricated steel structure for ease of erection and speed. Both the
main building and the Administration building used a portal frame structure and steel
sheet roof and infill of concrete block walls.
The total area of the development is 2,750 square metres. The final cost of the project
was US$1.7 million.
