IPS Buliding
KAMPALA , UGANDA
The IPS Building in Kampala was constructed in the early 1960s and was a
glass-clad building which suffered extensive damage during the civil unrest in Uganda
during the 1970s and 1980s. Minor rehabilitation was carried out during the early
1990s but with the growth of the property market in Kampala and a more competitive environment it was decided to carry out a major rehabilitation and recladding of the
building. The contract was let to Triad Architects in competition with other architects.
The proposal that was
tendered is for a complete recladding
of the building, using an Alucabond
system, refurbishment of all the lavatories
and improvements to the temperature
control systems to give tenants
an option of ventilation and
cooling of office spaces. A new cladding
system was designed to
give better thermal control of the
building with an external shading
system to reduce heat gain.
