Silverback Lodges
RUHENGIRI, RWANDA
Silverback Lodges was developed as a base for visitors to North Rwanda from which they could explore and visit the National
Park and the gorillas and view the scenery and attractions of the
area.
The site is located close to the park boundary and 5 km from
the Park Headquarters. The selection of the site was limited by
access, water supply and land availability. The site is at an altitude
of 8,500 ft (2,590.8 metres)
and its steep topography allowed for
the development of an interesting lodge with fine views into the
National Park and over the spectacular mountain scenery of the
Ruhengeri area. The lodge has 16 beds in 8 double bedrooms,
providing luxury accommodation to guests, with a high degree
of personal service. The rooms are banda style rooms in a natural
setting. A principal activity is gorilla tracking. Guests require a
serious amount of pampering when they return from what can be
an arduous walk and the lodge seeks to satisfy those needs. The
main house accommodates the lounge area and dining area
and a bar with a small library and information room. The altitude
presents some design challenges and the site can be cold.
The building has been designed to provide a cosy atmosphere,
reminiscent of a private house with the use of timber, brick and
quarry tiles..
