World Bank Housing
SOUTHERN, SUDAN
Following the Addis Ababa Accord in the mid 70s, Triad worked in Southern Sudan
on a variety of development projects, gaining wide experience in the region. Logistics
presented a design challenge which Triad overcame by developing structural frame
systems fabricated in Nairobi and which was combined with locally manufactured
blocks, combining traditional methods of construction with steel frame buildings,
allowing rapid construction and better quality buildings. Care was taken to ensure
that the buildings were comfortable, cross-ventilated and provided good
accommodation in the difficult climate of Southern Sudan.
Projects undertaken were World Bank Housing Project Juba (see above), World
Bank office accommodation, 2000 sq metres, in Juba, type designs for veterinary
laboratories construction in Juba, Marakal and various parts of Southern Sudan, housing
project for the Southern Sudanese Council of Churches in Juba, type plans for
institutional housing at Bor, proposals for district hospitals throughout the Southern
Sudan.
The project architect and partner in charge for Southern Sudanese operations during this period was Tim Vaulkhard, who is currently a director of the firm. Currently Triad are working with CARE on the Southern Sudan Education Programme and have designed buildings for the Teachers Training Institute at Maridi and standard school designs which are currently out to tender for secondary schools throughout the region.
